the stillness of late afternoons 

slips like a sharp knife  

its edges lined with the lost thoughts of a day

like a suicide of left behinds 

their bones thin on the break 

fall for the only hours left to go 

before the darkness fills the void

they hurry with plans and promises 

of better tomorrows 

reassurances are nodded and noted

if they just make it through the silence 

of the late afternoon break
